First Year as Professional Editor, FTW. XD

Posted in Diary, Inglisero, Snapshots on Hunyo 15, 2013 by R. P. Pineda

Today marks my first anniversary as professional editor. When an allergy suddenly attacked me yesterday, my mother arrived just in time and accompanied me through the ordeal of itch and hives. ‘Ma, thanks for coming over to “celebrate” with me and sorry for all my life rants. XD

Lord, I thank You for guiding me amid all uncertainties. These hives were indeed an unusual way to celebrate my professional anniversary, yet I know I am blessed.

Here is a picture of us while my mother is holding my new ‘baby.’ She is just so proud of it.

“When the money’s spent and all my friends have vanished
And I can’t seem to find no help or love for free
I know there’s no need for me to panic
‘Cause I’ll find Him, I’ll find Him next to me…”

-Emeli Sandé, Next to Me

Beautiful song, great singer-songwriter. Thanks for reminding me of the faith to carry on. 😀

“The people who love you will only see their deficiencies in your work. That’s the strength of good writing and the weakness of the human ego. Love and honesty don’t mix. To be an honest writer, you have to be away from home, and totally alone in life.”

-Crispin Salvador while playing chess with the narrator (Ilustrado by Miguel Syjuco)

Currently reading the book. Never regretted that between it and another popular book, I bought it first. Will discover more about Mr. Salvador and his mentee as I turn on the pages. 😀

Conceptual Science and Beyond 7: The First Book I Coauthored

Posted in Akademik, Diary, Inglisero, Snapshots on Hunyo 7, 2013 by R. P. Pineda

“You see, I’ve waited all my life for this moment to arrive. And finally…I believe.”

—Fantasia Barrino, I Believe

First, I will be acknowledging everyone who contributed to the making of this book. There is no page provided to express gratitude in the book, so all my thanks will be channeled through this post. Second, I just want to promote one of our company’s most recent books with the advent of the K to 12 curriculum in the country, especially that this is also my first major participation in the implementation of the program.

I actually had a very hard time writing my part in this book, the chemistry portion. When I was in high school, I loathed Chemistry not because I was having difficulties learning it, but because of teacher factors. I would not elaborate these further. Rather, I would be focusing on the fact that I have proven my worth as a versatile academic writer—I can go beyond my comfort zone in writing and do stuff which I normally will not do like natural and hard sciences. This may not be my forte, but I believe I delivered enough to suffice the needs of the end users, the students and the educators. My manuscript was thoroughly inspected by my editor, a chemistry professor who is also a fellow iskolar at the University of the Philippines—Diliman. Besides, following the outline of learning competencies specified in the K to 12 program of High School Science, I did my best to write concisely yet clearly to the best of my knowledge and with the help of useful sources.

The first words of gratitude is for my direct superior and coauthor in the book, Ms. Anna Cristina Nadora. She is the one who decided to include me in the panel of authors the last minute. Most likely, I would still be waiting for a big break in the realm of books had she not made that decision (I just hope I did not fail her too much!). Ma’am Anna, thank you so much. Cheers for this book and for our future projects in the company!

The production of this book would not be possible without the trust of our company heads, the dedication of the typesetters and artists inside the office, and the efficient printing schemes used by the outsource printer. Sir Ton, Ms. Judy, Mr. Melvin, Mr. Joel, Mr. Dennis, Mr. Niño, Mr. Carlos, Ms. Tina, and Adonai Printing, thank you very much for your patience amid all the rush manuscripts and tasks! More power to us.

During my struggles in doing the manuscript, much encouragement flowed from the blessed mouths of those friends closest to my heart. Thanks to the people whom I always confide my complaints, heartaches, and all other random things with, and yet they reciprocate with kind words and prayers. In particular, I am mentioning Darwin Nazal, Charlie Rivas, Nigel Panganiban, Paolo Macariola, Mark Manalang, Rosie Ramirez, Niña Palisoc, Yange Lagonoy, Kevin Matundan, Sha Mariano, and Marco Lopez (I hope I have named everyone in this list) for cheering me up to finish this race. Your contribution, no matter how small you think it is, is eternally appreciated.

The release of this book is in time with my first year anniversary as editor of our company. I know it is a great triumph, and at the same time, it is a great responsibility not only to the company but also to the consumers of our products, the schools and the Filipino youth. Because of this accomplishment, I am deeply inspired to help improve further the state of education in our country through producing quality educational materials.

This feat is for my family, who will always be there for me despite the physical distance I have from them each passing day. Most of all, I am never forgetting His goodness in my life, that I have slain another Goliath because He endowed me with the strength and wisdom to fight and claim His glory. All praise and honor He really deserves, then.

My next project, coming soon. Hoping always for the best.

Something to Be Done Soon

Posted in Diary, Inglisero, Rebyu on Hunyo 2, 2013 by R. P. Pineda

Life is too short to despise people who simply can’t help what they’ve done.

– Atty. Rudy Baylor’s thoughts while alone on his road trip from Wisconsin to South Carolina (The Rainmaker by John Grisham)

I think it’s also time for me to forgive and forget those that trespassed against me. But I would like to do it on my personal travels soon, when I can reflect in solitude. I am really enjoying Mr. Grisham’s books. :p
